SeventhAnnual Danyliw Research Seminar on Contemporary Ukraine

Chair of Ukrainian Studies, University of Ottawa, 20-22 October 2011
CALL FOR PAPER PROPOSALS
The Chair of Ukrainian Studies, with the support of the Wolodymyr George Danyliw Foundation, will be holding its Seventh Annual Danyliw Research Seminar on Contemporary Ukraine at the University of Ottawa on 20-22 October 2011. The Seminar will feature research papers, touching on Ukraine, from a range of disciplines that may include political science, history, anthropology (ethnology), sociology, religious studies, demography, economics, geography, literature, cinema, folklore and other fields  of social science and humanities.

The Seminar is open to all social science and humanities research topics, including in history and literature, on topics that include economic practices, migration, informal economy and politics, political regime and practices, national identity, gender, foreign policy and security, diaspora, and more.

Three topics will be given particular attention:

•The Seminar will pursue its ongoing exploration of the politics of memory, with papers devoted to the Famine (Holodomor), the Holocaust (Shoah), the purges, deportations, forced labor and other cases of mass violence, committed on the territory of what is today Ukraine, in the prewar, World War II and post-War period, involving, among others, Soviet, Ukrainian, Polish, German, Romanian and Hungarian military, police, or non-state formations. We are inviting paper proposals based on historical research or on political issues raised by the memorialization of these events in politics, society, and the arts.

•Particular attention will also be given to research proposals examining the role of religion in Ukraine. Solicited themes include religious policy in independent (or Soviet or pre-Soviet) Ukraine, the sociology (or anthropology) of religious beliefs and practices, religion and civil society, religion and nationalism, the legacy of Metropolitan Andrei Sheptytskyi, evangelical movements, religion in wartime and more.  The Seminar is inviting proposals based on historical or social science research touching on all religious denominations in Ukraine.

•With the significant political transformations experienced in Ukraine since the Orange Revolution, and since the election of Viktor Yanukovych in 2010, the Danyliw Seminar is also interested in showcasing proposals engaged in the study of various aspects of contemporary Ukrainianpolitics on issues pertaining to electoral politics, human rights, the rule of law, language politics, the rise of the far right, public protests, Ukraine-Russia relations, the European Union, constitutional politics, and more. Proposals with a theoretical and comparative angle are most welcome.

Depending on the pool of applications, the Seminar may focus on two or all of these topics, or create new thematic sections based on accepted proposals.

Scholars and doctoral students are invited to submit a 1000 word paper proposal and a 250 word biographical statement, by email attachment, to Dominique Arel, Chair of Ukrainian Studies, at  Данный адрес e-mail защищен от спам-ботов, Вам необходимо включить Javascript для его просмотра. AND  Данный адрес e-mail защищен от спам-ботов, Вам необходимо включить Javascript для его просмотра. .
