The Faculty of Sociology of the Higher School of Economics (НИУ ВШЭ) welcomes applications to the graduate workshop:
"Power, knowledge and civilisation: Norbert Elias's anti-Kantian sociology"
that Professor Emeritus Stephen Mennell (University College Dublin, School of Sociology) will teach in the context of the Faculty's international research seminar series (http://soc.hse.ru/international%20seminars).
The one-day graduate workshop will take place at the Faculty of Sociology of HSE (3 Kochnovskiy Proezd, Moscow) on Thursday 14 November 2013 (Time TBC). The workshop is open not only to HSE graduate and advanced undergraduate students, but also to interested students and scholars from other institutions.
A day before the workshop, on Wednesday 13 November at 18.00, Professor Mennell will give a lecture at the Faculty of Sociology with the title: "The American process of civilisation: a sceptical sketch". Everyone is warmly welcome to attend this lecture.
"Stephen Mennell has played a leading role in bringing the work of Norbert Elias to a wide international intellectual audience, through his own book Norbert Elias: Civilisation and the Human Self-Image (Blackwells, 1989; rev. ed. UCD Press, 1998), through his translations of Elias's What is Sociology? (1978) and The Germans (1996), and through selections of Elias's writings edited for University of Chicago Press and Blackwells. His most recent book is a study of American history in the light of Elias's theory, The American Civilising Process (Polity Press, 2007). Professor Mennell is one of the three members of the board of the Norbert Elias Foundation, Amsterdam - Elias's executors - and edits its international research newsletter Figurations. He is also General Editor of the Collected Works of Norbert Elias in English, which are being published by UCD Press in 18 volumes from 2006 to 2012. He has long had an interest in very long-term processes in the development of human society, and is an associate of the New Global History network based at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology."
