International conference announcement and call for papers
From one revolution to another:
Revolutionary circulations, 18th–21st centuries
Paris-Est Marne-la-Vall?e University
12–14 June 2013
The conference addresses the revolutionary phenomenon in modern and contemporary times from a
somehow neglected perspective: that of the circulation of theories and ideas, actors and practices, and
symbols and interpretations of revolutions. Revolution is defined as the invention of a radically new
political and social order. Yet, the breach of law and the development of new rules require practices
that have been already experienced and legitimized in previous revolutions. Thus, revolutions are
connected through the mobilization of a broad and complex set of symbols, images, texts, gestures and
codes that the actors constantly re-enact and reinterpret while preparing their own one.
Thus, the conference will focus on these connections between the different revolutions of modern and
contemporary times. An extended picture in time and space (from the American Revolution to the
Arab Spring) will allow us to examine both the long-term appropriations of the revolutions and their
crossovers over a shorter period. The challenge of the conference is, firstly, to examine revolutionary
phenomena through detailed empirical evidence (networks, spaces, conditions of the circulation of
revolutionary phenomena, actors and vectors, appropriation mechanisms), from the perspective of
connected and entangled history. Secondly, to draw collectively an overview of revolutionary
references and a mapping of the circulation of the revolutionary phenomena, establishing its centers,
peripheries and border areas. To this end, roundtable and discussion sessions will bring together
experts of different historical periods and geographical areas.
We welcome papers dealing with different revolutions from the late 18th century to the present,
whether they are recognized as such by the scientific community or only by their actors and by
contemporary observers. Priority will be given to proposals which clearly address this topic from a
perspective of connected history emphasizing the revolutionary circulations and references.
We are looking at the revolutions as starting points of circulations as well as arrival points, which imply
appropriation or rejection mechanisms, according to the national and regional context. The focus of
the conference will be:
- The narratives and images resulting from a process of selection, interpretation or translation;
- Agents, funding, weapons;
- Means of transmission of the revolutionary memory in the short and long term (political societies, the
Internationals, publishing houses, media, transport networks and hosting of the exiles).
Proposals (English, French, Spanish, German or Portuguese) should include:
- The title of the paper
- Abstract (500 words)
- A short CV including affiliation, list of publications and full contact information (email, postal
address, phone number)
