Dearest Gena,
On the eve of your important birthday, I think of what an extraordinary friend, colleague, scholar you have been and are. Above all, I know that Steve deeply valued your work, your friendship, your courage and perseverance in establishing and keeping alive AIRO-XXI.
To be an independent person anywhere in these times is difficult; to be one in Russia seems virtually impossible.
I remember Steve first reading and admiring your editorials in Kommunist, I believe Latsis was there.
He understood how important those were.
And I remember participating in AIRO jubilee in 2003, as the Iraq war started… And then 12 year old Nika practicing her remarks over and over. And she and Daniil were so small! And together on stage.
…I know if Steve were here he would be toasting you, as I do, for your courage, your wisdom, your friendship – He would also celebrate AIRO and what you have established.
